During your first visit with us, our team will review your past dental and medical history. Radiographs (x-rays) are prescribed on an individual basis and as needed for each patient. Radiographs allow us to assess the teeth themselves, as well as the health of the gums and the bone supporting the teeth. Our comprehensive new patient exam also includes a full periodontal exam (gum and bone health) and a TMJ exam. Using all the information collected, personalized treatment plans are developed for each patient.
The best way to prevent cavities and gum disease is by proper brushing and flossing techniques daily. Your hygienist will help you reach places you simply cannot with your home care regime and also remove the deposits of tartar (calculus) you can't get off with your toothbrush. Calculus is a hardened bacterial deposit, and if it remains, infection will remain. A professional hygiene appointment usually involves scaling and root planing (the removal of calculus from the teeth above and below the gums.) Removal of this calculus is a necessary step to prevent gum disease. Our hygienists will also help you with your home care and determine the best oral hygiene methods to be used at home.
Our digital radiography system provides excellent images with less radiation than conventional x-rays. We can instantly display the images on a computer monitor for the dentist and the patients to see. In addition, because there is no need to develop the x-rays, the disposal of harmful wastes like lead and other chemicals into the environment is eliminated.
